Event Details

During Bruce Smith Photography Academy courses in fashion photography you benefit from Bruce’s fashion photography tips and 37 years experience shooting for high profile fashion clients.

You will learn to communicate, direct your agency fashion model whom will be styled by professional fashion stylists, makeup artists and hair stylists.

You will also learn to be in control of every aspect of your fashion shoot from fashion story concept to finished images ready for press.

Images that are produced with models with great skin, great make up and beautiful lighting means models need much less retouching.

You will learn how to create beautiful light. Its our mission to teach photographers to shoot without relying on photoshop to create great images.

A very important step for a new fashion photographer starting out is to be at a level good enough to get bookers at top model agencies to provide them with good agency models to test with.

Its our objective that you reach this level after taking a 5 day fashion photography course with us.

What David Olsan has to say after taking one of our courses 8 months ago:

“It’s 8 months since I have taken the Fashion photography course with Bruce Smith.

A lot has happened since then: 7 editorials published, photo exhibited in the Royal Academy of Art Summer Exhibition, 3 look-books while keeping my full time IT job.

Before the course I knew how to use my camera but if you would have asked me what is a look-book I would not have had a clue. “Editorial” would be something that is very abstract to me. You can walk or you can fly.  With Bruce you will always fly…

Did I mention that I have just started testing with a top London model agency?”

We offer one-to-one and group photography courses in.

  • Studio fashion photography

  • Fashion nude photography

Courses held all over the world, in London, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Cape Town, Johannesburg, Melbourne, Sydney, Paris, Liverpool and Milan, plus other countries in Europe.  We can even arrange special tailored courses near you.

Shooting on location can be very tricky, how to choose where to shoot, dealing with both ambient light and artificial light i,e strobes, mixing the two.

Shooting in the studio also has its mysteries, which light and modifier to use, where to put it, how should you set up your background etc etc.

There will be a different fabulous professional full time fashion models for you to shoot each day along with my team of professional hair and make up artist and stylist, to ensure the models look and are styled to their best.

Each day, we will cover various fashion photography techniques of shooting in the studio, either indoors or outdoors, or both depending upon which location we will be using.

They all will give a good variety of both backgrounds and lighting situations, each with technical challenges that Bruce will help you to overcome with instructions, hints and valuable tips to get the best out of each location and the models.

The Bruce Smith Fashion Photography Academy

Bruce Smith Bio

When Bruce first started out as a fashion photographer he borrowed some fifties style ball gowns, initially for a fashion photography test shoot from a top fashion designer who sold her clothes through exclusive London stores.

Bruce presented her with some samples of his fashion photography test images and such was the impact of these images on the designer that she commissioned Bruce to shoot her next 3 major fashion collections, so what started out as a request for gowns to test with, a test shoot became a first paid assignment that was a published spread in one of the UK’s leading fashion magazines, at the time ‘Avant Guard’;

This recognition of his talent set Bruce off on a journey that has so far, spanned over 30 years. Confident and adventurous, he developed his own style and built a reputation for creating stylish, ‘classic’ images in couture and bridal wear.

Inspired by great fashion photographers from the decades past, such as Cecil Beaton, Norman Parkinson, David Bailey, Barry Lategan, Horst P. Horst, Irving Penn and Richard Avedon.

So, like many other successful fashion photographers, Bruce Smith achieved his first big break in the fashion photography business by setting up a test shoot with a model.  See video of images by Bruce. The next big break followed soon after when Catherine Raynor, a leading UK bridal wear couture designer whom had previously worked with such iconic photographers as Norman Parkinson, Terrance Donavan and after Catherine had shot with Bruce, John Swanell. Catherine commissioned Bruce to shoot for her. Her status within the bridal wear industry, and the success of the images that he had produced for her created a chain reaction which brought a queue of top bridal wear and couture designers to his studio door to shoot their collections.

By now, Bruce was becoming established as a leading fashion photographer. A commission from a leading UK bridal wear consumer magazine to shoot two editorial stories on location in Tobago led to many years of shooting high fashion for some of the top designers and manufacturers of couture and bridal wear, including Margaret Lee, Lyn Ashworth and Eleni Costi. Bruce’s classic fashion images inspired a long list of lingerie, hosiery and swimwear commissions from brands including, Charnos, Lapel, Silhouette, Miss Kini and Panache plus many more.

Shooting advertising campaigns, image brochures and catalogues, producing fashion shoots in some of the world most beautiful and exotic locations from Alaska to Kenya, Bruce had by now learned to arrange complete shoot productions for major fashion clients.  From the sourcing of the talent and production teams, location managers, catering, location transport, even helicopters and arctic supply vessels, Bruce manages and controls all of the necessary elements of high calibre fashion shoots. Shooting on location, with all of its challenges, taught Bruce to shoot fast with available light and use all of the necessary skills to create successful fashion stories.

With the advent of digital capture, Bruce recognized the need to be at the forefront of technological advances. Moving from Nikon F4’s to D series bodies, he has been a dedicated advocate of the Nikon system.

How To Shoot Digital Fashion Books

by Bruce Smith

The latest significant direction in Bruce’s career came when one of his long-term clients suggested that he should consider sharing his knowledge with others. This suggestion prompted the launch of The Bruce Smith Photography Academy that runs courses mainly in fashion photography as well as portraiture, fine art nudes, fashion nudes, boudoir portraiture, these run over one to five days either in the studio or out on location from London to Paris, Milan to Miami and other locations around the globe.

Bruce’s continued success in the digital era led to the completion of his comprehensive, practical guide to fashion photography which was published on both sides of the Atlantic. Pro Digital Fashion Photography and Fashion Photography A complete Guide. He is working on several new titles at the moment. See the Blog for more information.

For the past 37 years Bruce has been shooting for several genres of professional fashion photography, couture, bridal wear, lingerie, swimwear and hosiery have been his bread and butter work.

Bruce’s advertising fashion photography experience runs from shooting small fashion collection assignments in the studio to major catalogue productions around the world for which he has looked after all aspects of production from sandwiches to helicopters.
