If you love being in the hills and would like to share your enthusiasm and expertise with others by leading walking groups then this course is for you.

This six day course is intended for experienced hill walkers who wish to become leaders in the British mountains.

Please note that this course runs over two weekends and the dates are as follows:

Day 1-3: Friday 3 - Sunday 5 October

Day 4-6: Friday 10 - Sunday 12 October

The course will address technical skill, judgement and areas of knowledge which will make you a safe leader.

PRE-REQUISITES AND REGISTRATION

Mountain Training requires that all students are registered with them prior to commencing the course.

Mountain Leader training lasts for six days, including a two day expedition with an overnight camp, and will cover:

After completing a training course, use the feedback from your course director and the skills checklist (download below) to identify syllabus areas you need to practise.

ASSESSMENT

The Mountain Leader assessment is five days long, including a three day expedition with two overnight camps.

You will be assessed against the syllabus competencies in the candidate handbook.

At the end of the assessment you will receive one of three results:

Pass

Defer (requires a partial reassessment)

Fail (requires a full reassessment)

James has had over 15 years experience in outdoor activity leadership, coaching and guiding.

He is a qualified mountain instructor, teaching climbing, abseiling, ice climbing and navigation skills. He is also a qualified canoeing and kayaking coach on rivers and at sea. He also teaches bushcraft and is a British Canoeing Camp Craft and Expedition Skills provider.

The experience of being in nature can be uplifting and transformational. James specialises in working with people who have had very little opportunity of experiencing nature, either due to limited life chances or to suffering from mental health issues, in order to share with them the life-enhancing effects that being in wilderness can bring.
