SEN and Disabilities Seminar Series 2016/17

A Brief Foray into the Neuroscience of Child Development: implications for classroom practice
Belinda Harris, School of Education, University of Nottingham

Traumatic experiences in early childhood can have a profound effect on children’s neurological development and behaviour patterns. This seminar will support teachers to understand the classroom conditions needed for children and young people with complex trauma to begin to engage with learning. In this way they may contribute to the development of new neural pathways that support pupil well-being and achievement.

Dr Belinda Harris is Associate Professor and Director of Postgraduate Taught Courses in the School of Education at the University of Nottingham. She has extensive experience as a teacher and pastoral leader in secondary schools, and is a registered gestalt psychotherapist. She is particularly committed to enhancing the experience of traumatised children and young people in education.
