San Francisco, California
London, United Kingdom
"You do not need to fly to the other side of the planet to do an expedition. You do not need to be an elite athlete, expertly trained, or rich to have an adventure. Adventure is only a state of mind."
What is this evening about? If you dream of adventure but don't think you have the time for it, or if you feel that living and working in London makes the prospect of mid-week escape impossible, then this is the event for you. Do you wish that after work one day you could escape to the countryside, to find a pocket of peace and quiet, to sleep on a hilltop under the stars? You can.
Leave work at 6pm, jump on a train, hike up a hilltop, camp under the stars, take a dip in a lake at dawn before heading back in time for work on Friday morning. Serial adventurer Alastair Humphreys will help you overcome any doubts or difficulties you might anticipate on planning a midweek escape like this.
Alastair is one of those people who likes the outdoors, though we're not talking gardening. Al has run marathons in the Sahara Desert, rowed across the Atlantic, cycled around the world, canoed down the Yukon River and crossed Iceland by foot and inflatable packraft (among other things). He was also chosen as one of National Geographic's 2012 Adventurers of the Year.
An Introduction To Microadventures
Alastair will get you dreaming of escape with tales of his own microadventures around the UK. He will explain the tiny amount of gear you need to take and answer all your practical concerns. There will be plenty of good networking time to share a beer or two with fellow adventurous professionals and take the all-important first step towards escaping the city and having your first microadventure.
Al will be giving a brief presentation, though we're keen to ensure the event is as interactive as possible. He will cover:
- Some of his own microadventure stories and photos
- The what, where and how of mid-week adventures
- An explanation of 3 simple microadventures to get you started
The evening will follow the standard Evening Escape format, kicking off at 7pm with a quick introduction before handing over to our guest speaker. There will be plenty of opportunity for questions both during and after the talk. Guests are both invited and encouraged to stay for drinks and networking after the event.

What is The Escape School about?
It's not about opting out. It's about ambitious, talented people spending their careers doing work that matters; to them and to the world. We produce a wide range of talks, events and courses to educate, empower and connect our members for career changes, entrepreneurialism and adventure.
We have built the Escape School to teach what we wish we’d learnt back in 2009 when we were commuting to our corporate jobs, wondering how to drive our career in directions that matter to us.
