This one-day Visualising Data masterclass will look at how raw data can be turned into striking visual stories. It will cover both flat graphic design (infographics) and interactives. It will principally focus on the importance of good visual storytelling, offering advice and guidance on how data can be found, analysed and matched with what your chosen audience needs; as well as the evolution of data visualisation as a discipline and share examples of best practice. It will also look at how the design and presentation of graphs and charts can make a huge difference to their impact and memorability.
Guardian speakers will include Mariana Santos (motion and interactive designer), Jonathan Richards (interactive editor), Adam Frost (head of data visualisation( at the Guardian Digital Agency), Tobias Sturt (Design Manager) and James Ball (data journalist).
Held at One Wimpole Street, this is an intensive, lecture-style masterclass focussed on providing you with the knowledge to allow you to use data visualisation as a successful way of presentating information.
The masterclass is designed for:
• those who have to present for a living, using Powerpoint, Prezi or similar software
• those who work with data and wish to learn more about turning data into something visually compelling
• designers who wish to learn more about information graphics
• developers who are interested in creating more usable and elegant front-end solutions
Following the informative lecture sessions will be a panel discussion and question and answer time.
James Ball is a data journalist working for the Guardian investigations team. He joined the Guardian from Wikileaks, and the Bureau of Investigative Journalism. He is the Washington Post Laurence Stern Fellow for 2012.
Mariana Santos is interactive and motion designer at the guardian interactive team. She's been working in storytelling and data visualization editorial pieces together with a team of developers and journalists. Her passion is to bring stories to live, engaging users with the power of interaction in a two ways communication. Trying to combine the beauty of design with the power of technology to reach out with more meaning and interest to readers.
Tobias Sturt is the Design & User Experience Manager at the Guardian's Digital Agency. He has been working in digital storytelling for almost two decades, in all kinds of media, from web to TV to games to infographics. He has also worked on more conventional digital development projects, from website design to branding, from mobile app interfaces to print projects.
Adam Frost is Data Visualisation Manager at the Guardian's Digital Agency. As well as work for the Guardian itself, he has worked on data visualisation projects for clients as diverse as Vodafone, SAB Miller, Ofsted, Kantar, Millward Brown and Walmart. He has also managed large-scale web builds for the Department for Education and EDF Energy.
