International Research Students
April 27th 2017, 1.00 - 4.30 pm
Training Room 4.09, Graduate School, St Andrew's Court
This workshop is relevant to all those who supervise international students registered for a PhD, an MPhil or a Professional Doctorate. It is also relevant to those who may be part of a supervisory team of an international student in the foreseeable future. The aim of the workshop is to identify the issues and challenges of attracting and supervising international students and to explore good practice in addressing these.
The workshop will consider the expectations, challenges and opportunities of supervision from the perspective of both the supervisor and the research student.
The workshop will provide an opportunity to share good practice and to learn from the experience of colleagues in different parts of the university. The session will consider some of the common experiences that international students face and include feedback from past/present international students. The session will explore issues around attracting good international candidates. The workshop will also be an opportunity to discuss specific issues supervisors have with supervising international students.

Taken as a whole these sessions are about the professionalisation of supervision in the university, and sharing your knowledge and experiences in a supportive environment. If you are currently supervising students, the university expects you to undertake at least one session of supervision development during the year (even if it is not through one of these Graduate School events). With an average evaluation rating of 4.5/5 across the sessions, I hope you’ll also find them well delivered and entertaining!
