Bokeh Yeah! present From Script to Screen

A series of intensive Screen writing courses. The first of our intensive filmmaking courses aimed at emerging independent filmmakers.

From the initial idea to the script, every session will offer advice, collective writing activities, discussion and peer review.

The course will be lead by Nathalie Henry, who as a creative practitioner, has designed and delivered screenwriting workshops around the North of England. For the past five years she has delivered modules in Writing for the Screen and Fiction at the University of Leeds.

She is also a poet and playwright, working in both English and French. She directed and produced a poetic short, B.A.D. in 2013 and her research interests are European cinema and multilingualism.

The first course will be held at Madlab on Tuesday 6th May from 6 - 9pm and run for 10 weeks.

Places are limited to 15 people per course. Price per course is £150, Payable on subscription.

Week 1 - The Idea - Where to start?

  • Reasearch stories
  • Develop a group premise
  • Share and discuss your own premise

Week 2 - Structure - Where is your story going?

  • Discover key structures
  • Plan your step-by-step outline
  • Start your scene by scene synopsis

Week 3 - Characters - Whose story it is?

  • Focus on one of your characters
  • Create a character profile with notes and drawings
  • Role play and diary entry

Week 4 - Visuals and dialogue

  • How can you tell your story?
  • Write visually
  • Find out ways to be even more visual.

Week 5 - Genres - What kind of writer are you?

  • Research stories
  • Play with the genres
  • Share scenes
  • Give feedback

Week 6 - Visual storytelling - What will you show?

  • Revise your story
  • Find out how to be more visual
  • Share scenes
  • Provide constructive feedback

Week 7 - Script format - How to present your script?

  • Learn about usual conventions
  • Read out several sequences from different screenplays
  • Plan one page for one minute of screen time

Week 8 - First draft - Your chance to showcase your story

  • Present opening sequences
  • Give and receive feedback about the first scenes

Week 9 - Second draft - Use feedback for rewriting!

  • Read several sequences from your script
  • Give feedback to the community of writers
  • Receive verbal feedback on part or full script you present

Week 10 - The Script - The read through

  • Read through of the screenplays with Bokeh yeah! associated actors. We may even invite a few directors along
  • Planning the next steps
  • Send your script for consideration to be made by the Next Bokeh Yeah! short film challenge
