Event Details

In this workshop the participants will be investigating the aesthetic and conceptual abilities of mould construction and casting with plaster and concrete.

The architectural possibilities of both the negative space (the mould) and the positive space (the cast) will be considered through an intuitive and open-ended process. Students will be constructing and casting shapes, and are encouraged to experiment with different finishes, textures, colors and materials. Participants will have the opportunity to think through making and explore material qualities hands-on.

 

Day 1 - Experimentation

-Inverted space moulding and quick formwork

-Experimentation through making a series of quick sketch moulds and plaster casts.

-Casting in plaster

-Available materials: OSB chipboard, MDF, Flexible materials, form board, cardboard, plastics

 

Day 2 -Extrapolation

-Use the experiences gained in the sketches of day one to make new moulds and shapes

-Casting in plaster and concrete

-Adding colour and texture

-Finishing qualities

-Conclusion

 

Please bring protective clothing (inc. boiler suit and heavy duty footwear)

All materials will be supplied.

London Sculpture Workshop

London Sculpture Workshop is the first, London based, not-for-profit, community interest based company with exceptional facilities for artists and those interested in making work in 3D. London Sculpture Workshop offers a superbly equipped metal and wood workshop with additional mould making and flexible working areas. In addition to major equipment London Sculpture Workshop also provides a range of both electric and hand tools and access to Personal Protective Equipment for workshop users.  London Sculpture Workshop is based on an open-access membership scheme. It was also set up as a Partner to CRISIS, offering their members access to a specially tailored educational programme.

London Sculpture Workshop was established in 2012 by two founding members Giles Corby, MA (RCA) and Jessica Mello, MFA (Slade) who work closely with our Studio Manager Melis van den Berg, MFA (Slade). We are all practicing artists’ who have a combined arts education of 19 years and teaching experience of over 17 years. This year our work was recognised and we were awarded a Chelsea Arts Club Trust “Artist’s Run Space Award”.

London Sculpture Workshop is open ThursdayFriday 09:30- 13.00 & 14.00 - 17.30 operating on a pay-as-you-go open-access membership scheme, to those interested in making use of the facilities. Any first-time user’s session will start with an induction, which includes an overview of equipment and health & safety. Open-access is for anyone who has enough experience to work independently in the studio. There will always be a Studio Manager on site to help guide you in safe and proper use of the equipment.

Courses in a wide variety of technical and skill based processes will also be available to book throughout the year.
