This workshop will be an opportunity for artists working in any medium to work out some ideas in air drying clay, with expert guidance on how to realise work. The tutor Ruth Dupre's approach to teaching ceramics is very open and experimental, understanding the limitations of the medium, but also being confident enough to experiment.
Ceramics is a very desirable medium to work in but it is also difficult to succeed without some basic guidance. The tutor will discuss a wide variety of objects made in clay, (using books as a visual reference) from ancient Roman pottery to Grayson Perry and Rebecca Warren.
Air drying clay will be used. Experimentation will be encouraged and the clay can also be mixed with materials such as sand or grog or rolled in powdered glass, or graphite. Even household emulsion paint can be used to paint the surface, as it has a large amount of china clay in it. Possibilities are endless. Please note: these additional finishing materials need to be provided by participants on the course, only a sample selection will be provided for demonstration purposes.
Please note there will be a charge for air drying clay of £2.00 per 500g
