 CAS is thrilled to welcome Michael Walmsley, PhD student at University of Waikato, to the UK to present his CodeAvengers Java Script Programming workshop for Teachers.


Intended Audence:

Suitable for Teachers with little or no programming background. Targeted at teachers who would like to teach programming but lack the confidence to do so, as well as teachers who are looking for a more fun, effective and painless approach to introducing students to real world coding.



Workshop Outline


1600 - Part One: Introduction

Overview of workshop contents and introduction to presenter's background. Brief discussion on the pros and cons of teaching JavaScript, and finally an introduction to CodeAvengers.com Javipt courses and teacher tools.




16.15 - 1735 Part Two: JavaScript Level 1

A series of four 5 - 10 minute mini-lectures and discussions, followed by 10 - 15 minute hands-on programming exercises using a CodeAvengers course developed specifically for professional development of teachers. During the session, teachers practice the agile software development technique pair programming as they learn the basics of JavaScript: the programming language of the web.

This tutorial covers the topics taught in the CodeAvengers level 1 javaScript course

Break (15 mins)


17.50  - 1850 Part Three: JavaScript Level 2

Using the same style as the previous part, this part covers three topics taught in the CodeAvengers Level2 JavaScript course


  • Validating input
  • Functions
  • Arrays




18.50  – 19.10 Part Four: JavaScript Level 3

The final part explains how to create games and aps with JavaScript without using the CodeAvengers environment and demonstrations of two options to do this:


 - HTML/CSS GUI with JavaScript to add interactivity

- 2D JavaScript games using the Paper.js graphics library

Computing At School  (CAS) aims to promote the teaching of Computing at school. CAS was born out of our excitement with our discipline, combined with a serious concern that many students are being “turned off” computing by a combination of factors that have conspired to make the subject seem dull and pedestrian. Our goal is to put the excitement back into Computing at school. 

The Computing At School  group (CAS) is a grass roots organisation, whose energy, creativity, and leadership comes from its members. CAS is a collaborative partner with the BCS through the BCS Academy of Computing, and has formal support from other industry partners. Membership is open to everyone, and is very broad, including teachers, parents, governors, exam boards, industry, professional societies, and universities. We speak for the discipline of computing at school level, inc.  FE, and not for any particular interest group.
