Event Details

St John's College, Oxford, in collaboration with Eyedea Professional Network, are delighed to invite all female alumni for a second networking dinner in London.

The evening will provide a chance for St John's women to (re)connect and to listen to words of wisdom from three brilliant alumnae working in media: Janine Gibson (Editor-in-Chief, BuzzFeed UK) Barbara Slater (Head of Sport at the BBC) and Lesley-Anne Brewis (BBC1 'The Code' show host). They will talk about their careers, lives since St. John's, and give a few tips to fresh graduates on starting out.

Eyedea's London network is run by two St John's college alumnae (Ann Hyams and Marta Szczerba, both 2008) who are pairing up with St John's College to host a second networking event after the success of the first event in 2014. The 2014 dinner celebrated 2,000 women matriculating into college, and you can read an overview of the evening here

All females are warmly invited to the evening, regardless of the date of graduation for an evening filled with food, wine, and the change to reconnect with old friends (and make some new friends too!)

The event is open to St John’s College female alumnae of all ages. Please e-mail alumni.office@sjc.ox.ac.uk if you have any questions. The dress code for the event is smart.

About the speakers

Janine Gibson (1990); Editor in Chief, BuzzFeed UK

Janine Gibson has been appointed editor-in-chief of BuzzFeed UK

Janine Gibson is the editor-in-chief of BuzzFeed UK, running the news team in London and overseeing all editorial content since September 2015. Prior to BuzzFeed, Gibson worked at The Guardian for 17 years, most notably launching The Guardian US in 2013 and overseeing its Pulitzer Prize–winning reporting of the Edward Snowden leaks. Her other roles at The Guardian included media editor, launching and editing the mediaguardian.co.uk website and editor of theguardian.com.

Janine's extensive experience in journalism began immediately after leaving St. John's with her first roles including Televisiual, Broadcast magazine, and The Independent.

Barbara Slater OBE (1982); Head of Sport, BBC

Barbara is the BBC's first female Director of Sport, having previously been Head of Production and Head of General Sports. She was awarded an OBE for services to sport broadcasting in 2014. Her career choice may not be a surprise considering the wealth of sporting talent in her family; her father was an international footballer and her uncle also played cricket for England. Barbara herself is a very talented gymnast, gaining 20 international caps including the 1976 Olympics. She joined the BBC in 1983 and built up her TV experience from here, making her well positioned to climb the corporate ladder into her subsequent roles.

Lesley-Anne Brewis (2000); co-host of the new BBC1 daytime quiz show 'The Code'

Lesley-Anne works as BBC1's quiz expert on their daytime TV show 'The Code'. Since she left St. John's Lesley has been organising quizes for a broad range of audiences, at a variety of venues including museums, routemaster buses, and in sports stadia! We look forward to hearing about her variety of work and how she brushes up on her general knowledge as part of her exciting and unique career path.
