Hands-on experience:

How to inspire your STEM students through CREST Award Project Work

Gain your very own CREST Award!

Have you seen STEM enrichment and enhancement activities and been daunted by the paperwork or complexity? Has the range of choice been too great? We may have the answer. CREST awards is a flexible, adaptable scheme that has something for all ages from 11-19.

This one-time event is a special chance to have a go at getting your own CREST Award!

Registrations for this event have now closed.  If you missed out but would still like to attend, email Sam Durbin ASAP on sam@stemclubs.net, and she will put you on the waiting list for cancellations.

You will work on a STEM project for the day with other teachers, going through the CREST Bronze level process to complete a CREST project.  You will:

  • Gain real experience of running STEM activities
  • Pick up practical tips for running the awards scheme in your schools
  • Go through the awards process from start to finish and see them from the students' point of view
  • Get a unique perspective on the awards
  • Take home some CREST-Accredited activity ideas
  • Gain your very own Bronze CREST Award!

The CREST Coordinators and STEM Club Advisors for London will be present to discuss any specific opportunities for introducing CREST Awards into your school.  Lunch will also be provided.

We are excited to confirm that the Bronze CREST Project will be the Young Science and Engineering (YSE) Competition designed by Integral Incorporated.

This is a Young Enterprise company, made up of a team of truly inspiring sixth formers. They piloted the YSE competition last year with over 100 year ten students, gaining Silver CREST Awards in the process and winning the prize for the Best STEM Club Project in London and the South East. Since gaining a Young Enterprise award, the company has developed a series of different YSE competitions and are available for School bookings.

We have the very special opportunity of taking part in a shortened version of their most popular competition - gaining all the hands-on experience to support a CREST award project as well as having a lot of fun!  You will also get the chance to see one of the very best examples of a Silver CREST project, and to work with the amazing group of students that made it all happen.

See below for more information on Integral Inc., the YSE competition, and the CREST Awards Scheme.

Book your place now! Deadline is 12:30pm on Tuesday 7th February

About the CREST Awards Scheme:

CREST Awards are a project-based scheme, in which students can undertake investigative projects in any one of the STEM subjects.  They can do some really in-depth and hands-on research into something that particularly interests them, design and make practical experiments or prototypes, or choose to reseach something to communicate to others.  There are three levels of award - Bronze, Silver and Gold.

Students who engage in CREST projects benefit from the experience in a number of ways. In addition to gaining practical, research and problem-solving skills, they also learn to work collaboratively with others and to carry out research appropriate for the project aims. The scheme is endorsed by UCAS and both prospective employers and universities will recognise that students who have gained CREST awards at any level have qualities which set them apart from other candidates.

The scheme offers the opportunity to schools for increased enhancement and engagement in STEM, and encompasses the type of cross-curricular initiatives which are popular with OFSTED.

For information about the scheme, please visit the CREST pages on the British Science Association website:

About the Integral Incorperated and the Young Science and Engineering Competition:

Integral Incorporated offers students in Years 9 and 10 the opportunity to take part in large scale business simulation STEM subject workshops: the Young Science and Engineering (YSE) Competition.

The YSE Competition is run by the Integral Incorporated Directors: sixth form students who have spent five years working together on similar STEM Projects, winning numerous national/global prizes and awards. Participating students are divided into four companies and spend two days designing a settlement in a barely hospitable environment according to details in a tender. At the end of the design process, each team will present a proposal of no more than 35 slides to a panel of judges in order to decide the winning proposal.

The YSE Competition by Integral Incorporated is an incredible opportunity for all students. Not only does it promote interest in Science, Maths and Engineering, it also helps build soft skills such as teamwork, group and time management, and presentational skills through allowing students to run their own companies. Furthermore, the competition emphasises the importance of Business (cost efficiency and profit) as well as encouraging entrepreneurship and thinking ‘outside the box’.

If you would like to find out more or would be interested in taking part in an Integral Incorporated two day workshop in your school, see www.integral-incorporated.co.uk or contact them directly: kmunns@integral-incorporated.co.uk.

CREST Awards - A British Science Association Programme

CREST is a project-based awards scheme for the STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) run by the Brisith Science Association. It links the personal passions of students to curriculum-based learning.

UCAS endorse CREST Awards for inclusion in students’ personal statements – they’re well regarded, high-quality and a tangible recognition of success. Last year alone, over 28,000 CREST Awards were undertaken – giving 11-19yr olds opportunities to explore real-world projects in an exciting way. CREST can link into work experience placements, after-schools clubs or numerous linked schemes. Students can investigate or design and make, research a subject, or design a science communication project.
