Description

Children and youths who have experienced abuse and neglect are at a high risk for significant difficulties in their neurological and behavioural development.

Children with psychological problems secondary to histories of abuse and neglect provide a serious challenge to parents and therapists. For the past 20 years Dr. Hughes has specialised in the treatment of children who manifest serious deficits in their emotional, cognitive, and behavioral development, and at the same time demonstrate considerable difficulty establishing and maintaining secure attachment relationships.

Dan's style is to take a story telling stance which is characterised by Playfullness, Love, Acceptance, Curiosity and Empathy (PLACE). Dan discusses the principles and strategies of the treatment and care required for our children and to help us, the parents and carers, to understand the full effects of both attachment and trauma. Dan's model of intervention will be demonstrated with videos of treatment session.

Dan will share how his treatment is family based and focused on facilitating the child's ability to establish a secure attachment with their caregivers. Developmental attachment theory and research is the primary model for resolving trauma and developing relationships. Dan blends various approaches in his treatment methods, he actively communicates empathy and acceptance of the individual child while providing the child with the comfort and containment needed to explore and resolve past trauma and shame-related experiences. At the same time he is actively facilitating the child's ability to form positive, reciprocal relationships with their parents. Within the safety of these relationships, the child is able to finally face and resolve their past traumas. Also, as the child gradually develops a secure attachment with their caregivers, they develop a positive and integrated sense of self.

The one day workshop is designed to:

1. Understand the effects of developmental trauma and attachment disorganisation.

2. Understand the developmental effects of a secure attachment

3. Understand the basic principles of Dyadic Developmental Practice

4. Understand the basic principles of caregiving for developing attachment security

5. Understand the characteristics of day-to-day care
