London, United Kingdom
IN PARTNERSHIP WITH
DIGITAL SIZZLE 9 - ART HACKATHON 2
FRIDAY 26TH JULY - SUNDAY 28TH JULY 2013
SOUTH PLACE HOTEL, 3 SOUTH PLACE, LONDON, EC2M 2AF
Remember last September's Digital Sizzle 6 - Art Hackathon?
“My best weekend ever... never had so much fun. The whole thing was very well organised, the food and the drinks available were awesome. This is the best hackathon I’ve been to. 3beards are pushing the boundaries in building a community of innovators for the future of technology."
- STEPHEN CHAN, SPECIAL MOVES (PARTICIPANT)
We loved it too Stephen, so we're doing another! But this time with utterly more style.
5 star South Place Hotel is the venue for the most deluxe hackathon ever to take place.
The brief is "take any data and turn it into something creative".
We're looking for a mixture of developers, programmers, artists, musicians, and polymaths (combinations of the 2!).
This will be the most luxurious time you will ever spend "working"...
What if I don't want to stay overnight?
That's fine! Although we still need you to buy a ticket.
Shared accomodation in the hotel rooms - please note that not everyone will get a bed though! So bring your sleeping bags :)
All your food and drink is included too!
Why are you charging?
We're a company that focuses on the community, but at the end of the day we're still a company! The ticket costs go towards the event running costs, and also help us continue to provide awesome events in future!
What happens at the weekend event?
On the Friday night, we'll facilitate ideation and team formation. If you have an idea, you can pitch it, and gather members for your project. If you don't have an idea, this is your chance to join a team!
You can begin working on your projects whenever you are ready - last year some teams started on Friday night, but the majoirty started hacking on Saturday morning.
Throughout the course of the weekend, we'll be monitoring progress, and providing mentors to help speed things along and help out.
Come Sunday, it's demo time! From around 4/5pm we'll begin the demo sessions, and then judgement shall commence!
What happens after the hackathon weekend?
Fantastic question. Last year, we chose the best projects and put them in Whitechapel Gallery for one night only.
This year, there will be a 2 day display at South Place Hotel, showcasing as many projects as possible.
PLUS, the best projects will be selected to be displayed at The Barbican for 2 weeks at the end of August!

Let's go inside and see...
Luxury 5 star shared* rooms for sleeping for the weekend included
Bathrooms to match
Inspiring rooms for you to work in
Rooms to brainstorm
Rooms to relax
And of course, all food and drink for the weekend is included :)
* There are 16 rooms in total. We cannot guarantee everyone will get a bed, so you might end up sleeping on the floor in one of the rooms. But it's a 5 star floor baby!
What is an "Art Hackathon"?
In the summer of 2012, we were approached by Whitechapel Gallery, who wanted to work with us in putting on an event to “attract a larger tech footfall to the venue”.
By reverse engineering the brief, we decided that the best means to this end would be to create a precluding event, the Hackathon, whereby participants would generate content to be displayed at the Gallery.
The concept for the Art Hackathon was to meld together the worlds of art and tech - we invited 50 developers and 50 artists to join us for a weekend at Mozilla HQ in London, with the brief: “Take any data and turn it into something creative/artistic”.
The results were extremely varied - from a musical fish tank (with live goldfish) to an installation recreating weather from around the world (with actual wind & rain!).

A week and a half after the hackathon took place, in mid-september 2012, we displayed the best projects at Whitechapel Gallery for one night only - to an audience of 600 people.
Some of the work was even invited to be displayed at the 2012 Wired event, which took place in October 2012.
What's happening for 2013?
Following the fantastic feedback we had from participants, attendees and sponsors, we are looking to recreate last year’s event on a grander scale.
The event will be split into 2 parts, like last year: the hackathon, and the exhibition. Digital Sizzle Art Hack 2013 is in partnership with the South Place Hotel in Moorgate.
As an Art Hotel, South Place hosts a number of inspirational works across its seven floors. Created by D&D London and designed by Conran, it must be one of the most luxurious locations for a hackathon ever.
Hackathon: 26th - 28th July 2013 @ South Place Hotel
Over the weekend of 26th - 28th July 2013 we will invite a mixture of 100 people - artists, developers, musicians and creatives, guided by a variety of mentors, to just simply “create”. We have 2 floors - the whole conference floor and a whole floor of rooms at South Place Hotel, all dedicated to the Art Hack for the entire weekend. Throw in the traditional Digital Sizzle hospitality and this year’s Art Hack will surely be the most exquisite hackathon ever to take place on UK soil.
Exhibition: August / September 2013 @ TBD
Last year we were only able to display the projects for one evening (albeit to 600 people) at the Whitechapel Gallery. This year we are looking into have a longer exhibition than the one night event we had last year.
At the very least, we will be having an “open day” event sometime in August or September at South Place Hotel, with a celebration party in the evening. We are also looking into other options to follow this event, with discussions already happening with various galleries across London.
