Launch your own online retail empire in just one weekend

If you're already an eBay or Etsy veteran but want to expand your operation, keep more of your profits or stand out from the competition, setting up an online store is the logical next step. No matter what line of business you're in, this course is your ticket out of the online bazaars and onto the digital high street.

Over a single weekend, Guardian Senior UX Architect Lee Simpson will guide you through the process of setting up, personalising and publicising your own online outlet using apps such as Shopify and Stripe. No coding experience is necessary, and by the end of the course, you'll have set up a fully-functioning e-commerce site capable of processing online card transactions, and have mastered the basics on online sales and marketing.

You'll learn how to incorporate web analytics to track your traffic, get to know your customers better and set up digital marketing campaigns, as well as how to create a blog for your shop, refine your customer experience, and start selling for yourself.

This course is for you if...

  • You're currently selling on Etsy or eBay, and are interested in making the move to platform-based e-commerce retail
  • You have a business or product idea and are looking to set up an online store for the first time
  • You're relatively new to e-commerce and looking to improve your store, or take your operation to the next level

Course description

This highly practical weekend course provides a detailed step-by-step introduction to setting up an online retail platform to allow you to sell goods and services from your own home or office. By the end of the course, attendees will have built their online store and learned the basics of content and social marketing, and be ready to start trading with confidence. No previous e-commerce experience is necessary, although some familiarity with social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter would be an advantage. Topics covered on the course include:

  • Choosing an e-commerce platform
  • Setting up Shopify
  • Choosing a theme for your e-commerce store
  • Choosing and installing a Shopify theme
  • Crafting your customer experience
  • Getting started uploading products to Shopify
  • Metrics and analytics: learning from customer behaviours
  • Setting up your store with Google Analytics
  • Choosing a payment provider
  • Setting Stripe for payments online
  • An introduction to content and social marketing
  • Setting up the information pages and blog for your store

Tutor profile

Lee Simpson is a Senior User Experience Architect at the Guardian, working on Digital CMS and interactive projects. Previously, he worked with startups, agencies and organisations as a freelance developer and designer for almost 10 years, his clients including ITV, Channel 4, TalkTalk, EE and the NHS. He has been a guest lecturer at both HyperIsland and Newcastle College and is a mentor on both the Ignite100 and SearchCamp startup accelerator programmes for 2013.
