Following the decision by the UK to Brexit from the EU, James Humphrey and Kathryn Casey-Evans from Trethowan's Solicitors will take those attending through the potential outcomes as these are likely to effect employers/employees, and what HR can do to build business resilience legally into the workforce.

Employment law cases currently going through the Courts will be covered, together with their impact and outcomes.  These include:

  • Holiday pay - British Gas
  • Employment Tribunal fees - Unison
  • Whistleblowing case work
  • Gender pay - Asda
  • Age Discrimination - compulsory retirement after 30 years' service in the Police Force
  • Religious Discrimination - not permitted to wear the Islamic veil

In addition, James and Kathryn will provide a casework scenario for participants to discuss in groups and identify how they would take it forward.

Our speakers

James Humphrey is a rounded senior employment lawyer, a CEDR accredited mediator and immigration expert.  James' work for employers is grounded in HR support and informed by his extensive experience of taking and defending actions in Employment Tribunal, the Employment Appeal Tribunal, the Courts and the First Tier Tribunal.  In his immigration practice, James supports businesses with strategic advice on regulatory compliance using his understanding of current rules and emerging themes in national immigration policy.  James' support for employees is based on a rigorous identification of the issues and a realistic assessment of remedies and the prospects of success.

Kathryn Casey-Evans is a Partner in the Employment Team, handling a wide variety of employment matters.  She has considerable experience in advising predominantly employer clients on a range of employee issues and representing them in Employment Tribunals.  An experienced advocate, Kathryn possesses in-depth knowledge of TUPE, advising businesses and insolvency practitioners on their rights and liabilities.  Her key message in this area is practicality, looking to find helpful and commercial solutions where legal requirements appear too restrictive.
