Enterprising Birmingham Innovation Competition

The Enterprising Birmingham Innovation Competition is aimed specifically at research staff and academics that have research based ideas for creating new enterprise. The competition is intended to help to nurture and develop innovative ideas and reward enterprising researchers.
The Enterprising Birmingham Showcase being held in the Business School on 26th March, promises to be an exciting demonstration of some of the University’s brightest commercial projects and entrepreneurial spirit as the finalists battle for a share of the £24,000 prize money in front of a panel of expert ‘Dragons’.
The competition is divided into two categories under which applicants can submit plans:
- Innovative ideas for product / technical process based enterprise
- Innovative ideas for service / business process based enterprise
Six innovative commercial opportunities arising from research across the University have been chosen by a panel of businesses leaders. The finalists will present their ideas in front of a 2nd panel of experts and an audience of university staff, alumni and guests from business and the public sector at the showcase event on 26th March at the University’s Business School.
The finalists come from a range of disciplines that reflects the diversity of talent within the University of Birmingham.
The finalists are:
- Sampson Hu- Ultra-low cost antenna for cellular handsets
- Yanina Sevastsyanovich- Increasing efficiency of biopharmaceutical production
- Isaac Chang- Reducing production costs of fine boron carbide powders by low temperature synthesis
- Oliver Goodyear- Generation of a separation device for human therapeutic cells
- Fancois-Xavier Li – Youth football performance screening and optimisation
- Scott Lucas – EA WorldView: Internet based news agency, with live coverage and analysis of latest international developments
We do hope that you will join us to celebrate the creativity of our researchers which will show you some of the innovative commercial projects in progress at the University of Birmingham as well as giving you a chance to network with university academics and specially invited guests from the world of business and commerce as well as the public sector.
A networking buffet lunch and drinks reception will be provided for all guests.

Professor Tony Anson, Brunel University
Key Note Speaker – Professor Tony Anson, Brunel University
Tony Anson is a biomedical engineer and entrepreneur, and leads the MSc Biomedical Engineering module on biomaterials and biomechanics at Brunel University. Prof Anson has founded several start-up companies and is a director of Renishaw Advanced Materials, through which he organises commercial diamond-like carbon coatings and other advanced manufacturing applications.
