Essential Mentoring Skills Workshop– for CoP Mentors

Target Audience: Led by: Anna Sheather, External Tutor (Elan Coaching)

Brief Outline: This half day workshop explores how to be a mentor and how to set up and run a successful mentoring session. It looks at the key attributes of being a good mentor, the roles & responsibilities of both the mentor and mentee, and what is required to build a good mentor/mentee relationship. By then end of the workshop participants will have a good idea of what is involved in a mentoring relationship, have tried out key mentoring skills and know whether it is for them.

What you can expect to learn: You will:

  • Have a clear idea of what mentoring is

  • Understand the differences and similarities between coaching and mentoring

  • See who can be a mentor and the attributes that make a good mentor

  • Know when mentoring is the right approach and when it is not

  • Be clear about the roles and responsibilities of both the mentor and mentee in a mentoring relationship

  • Understand how to build a strong mentor/mentee relationship

  • Know how to set up and run a mentoring programme and have some tools to help you

  • Have tried out some of the key skills required for mentoring

  • Be aware of problems that can arise and how to address them

  • Be able to assess if you want to become a mentor and what additional development you may need to do this

  • Be given references to follow up if you wish to explore the subject further
