Essentials - An Induction day for GSLs and DESCs

This one day workshop has been designed for Group Scout Leaders & District Explorer Scout Commissioners
It complements the GSL Essentials – an induction document for new GSLs and DESC Essentials - an induction document for new DESCs
This one day workshop has been designed with newly appointed District Explorer Scout Commissioners (DESCs) and Group Scout Leaders (GSL) in mind.
However, we are also happy to welcome Assistant Group Scout Leaders (AGSLs), and anyone interested in knowing more about the GSL role. If you are not currently a DESC but are interested in the role please contact the event organiser before reserving your place.
The day will cover-
- The role of the GSL / DESC
- The role of the Executive
- Managing your Group or Units
- Scouting Safely
- The support available to you
- Development Planning
The day also includes free time to enable you to chat and network with other DESCs & GSL’s from across the West Midlands.
There will also be an opportunity to chat to the Regional Services Team who can offer support and advice on all aspects of recruitment and development within Scouting. There will also be a resource area for you to obtain samples of free resources that are available.
The day will begin with coffee, registration and Bacon rolls from 8:30am with a prompt 9:00am start. We expect the day to end at approx 4:30pm.
The event is free to attend and lunch and all refreshments are provided.
Places are limited and will be allocated on a first come first served basis.
Getting there: The event is to be held at The Holiday Inn Hotel Walsall.

The Hotel has ample free parking, directions are included in your booking confirmation.
Dress code: This is an informal workshop so uniform is not needed. We would suggest smart casual clothing.
Bring: You may bring an I-pad or tablet if you prefer to make notes in this manner, pens and paper will be provided along with a copy of GSL or DESC Essentials and also a goody bag of useful resources.
Refreshments: Breakfast rolls will be served at 830am.
Tea, coffee, soft drinks and biscuits will be available during the day.
Lunch: Lunch is provided for you free of charge and is served in the hotel and is usually a buffet style lunch.

The Scout Association - West Midlands Regional Services Team
The main focus of the Regional Services Team (RST) is the development and growth of Scouting in local communities.
The service covers the eight Scout Counties that make up the West Midlands Region; Birmingham, Coventry, Hereford & Worcester, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Solihull, Warwickshire and West Mercia
