Description

This one-day course is designed as an introduction to communication through touch, for people working closely with a congenitally deafblind/multi sensory impaired child or adult. It focuses on the benefits of using a hand under hand approach that respects the hands of children who have severe sensory loss and complex communication support needs.

This course is suitable for practitioners working with children or adults. To ensure the course is as relevant as possible, we run the course with either a child or adult focus, so please check when you are booking.

This course will cover:

  • Benefits of using a hand-under-hand approach
  • Principes for good practice
  • How to be a good communication partner
  • What we mean by Talking and Listening Hands
  • Putting the theory into practice

Course aim:

  • To share ideas and reasons for tactile resistance in children with deafblindness / multi-sensory impairment (MSI)
  • To discuss and demonstrate appropriate ways of approaching and interacting through touch with children with deafblindness / MSI (includes DVD / video footage)
  • To provide an opportunity to practice communication through touch – how we encourage exploration, how to ‘listen’ and ‘talk’ with our hands
  • To enable participants to learn through practical simulation and observation within small group work
