Course Content

Delegates will hear the NAAS story from Salford Royal’s senior nursing team, learning unique insights into its history and development, including a walk through the assessment process and learning from the NAAS.

The day will include a ward visit where participants will see NAAS in action and be able to ask questions of the nursing staff. Finally participants will be encouraged to share their stories of assuring quality, safety and reliability in local settings. Over the day, participants will develop a local action plan for how they might implement a ward assessment / accreditation system in their local setting.

What is NAAS?

In 2007 Salford Royal had no system for understanding the quality of care being delivered at the ward level. Over the next eight years they systematically developed an assessment process, which drove a culture of improvement change in the organisation.

This system, called the Nursing Assessment and Accreditation System (NAAS), is a peer review process structured around 13 core standards (some of which are mandated, some of which come out of improvement work). The NAAS is carried out over two days and includes a review of data, systems and staffing on day one and a ward visit on day two. Feedback is immediate and wards are assessed as red, amber or green.

The rating received determines the frequency of the next visit with any red ward being reviewed within 3 months following an agreed improvement plan. Wards who receive a green rating on three consecutive occasions are offered the opportunity to go forward for SCAPE status (safe, clean and personal every time). To achieve this, SCAPE status wards must produce an evidence portfolio and are interviewed by senior leaders at a SCAPE panel. A recommendation is then made to the board before final sign off is made.
