Event Details

As part of the Food is GREAT campaign, Defra and Santander are delighted to invite South West food and drink businesses to this comprehensive and thought provoking workshop to help map out your journey overseas.

Throughout the day, there will be four sessions outlined below as well as 18 experts who will be able to give you valuable 1-2-1 advice for your business.

09:30

Registration

10.00 – 10.45

Session 1: The Financing of Exports

One of the biggest perceived barriers to exporting for SMEs in the UK is the cost of financing an export strategy along with a fear of not getting paid.  Yet a challenging economic landscape coupled with research showing that SMEs that trade abroad are more likely to succeed, means many SMEs are now looking closely at how their business can benefit from trading abroad, or to look at new export markets.

This session will look at how SMEs can mitigate the risks associated with funding their export strategy, highlighting the many mechanisms of payment and the forms of funding available to an SME.

Speakers: Julie Ounsworth, International Director, Santander and Hugh Francis, UK Export Finance

11.00 – 12.30

Panel session:  Exporting Experience

A strong commitment to export and the ability to identity the right markets to enter is important to the success of your export strategy.  Come along to our panel session to hear from your peers in the region on how they have succeeded and the opportunities (and challenges) they faced along the way. Panellists:  Proper Cornish, Sheppy’s Cider, Granny Gothards.  Chair: John Williams, Breakthrough, Santander

12:30 – 13:15

Networking lunch

13:30 – 14:15

Session 3 The Importance of Packaging

Understanding the changes you will need to make to your packaging when selling your products overseas is an important factor to growing your sales.

This workshop will provide you with an insight into international marketing, and considerations to bear in mind when designing your packaging and labelling.

With practical advice and information, you will gain an insight into how to adapt your packaging for overseas markets as well as an understanding of the legal requirements

Speaker: Emilie Calhaem, International Trade Adviser

14:30 – 15:15

Session 4 How to export alcohol

Knowing the rules and regulations implicating the export or alcohol is a crucial step for you if you export beer, cider, wine and other alcoholic products. This session is suitable for companies interested in, and starting to export alcohol, and there will be opportunity for more experienced alcohol exporters to ask questions.

Speaker: Neil Brettel, HMRC
