Hailed as a unifying force after eight years of increasingly divisive Republicanism, Barack Obama has proved to be a controversial figure in US politics, and not merely among Tea Party conspiracists.
Over the course of this evening seminar, the Guardian’s renowned US correspondent Gary Younge takes a clinical look at the realities of Obama’s America. From dissecting the mechanics of Obama’s rise to power, Younge will put Obama’s economic, social and foreign policies under the microscope, examining the record of a leader committed to equality who has presided over a startling growth in America’s income gap, and an opponent of the Iraq war who has escalated drone strikes. Younge will also provide a powerful alternative to the mainstream media narrative including Obama’s rise through the Democratic ranks, his courting of the electorate, ending with a sure to be animated Q&A session.
