What power does theatre have to effect social change? As we witness huge shifts in society, artists and activists are playing a pivotal role in reflecting the hopes and dreams of communities. Across the world - from the Umbrella protests in Hong Kong to Greenpeace’s Giant Polar bear - theatre is being used as a tool to highlight and galvanise people around civil issues.

Wales has a long history of grassroots activism and community theatre, so in the age of austerity, globalisation and growing inequalities, how will this history help shape the future in Wales and beyond?

Join us for a conversation about theatre, grassroots and activism hosted by The Guardian’s Lyn Gardner alongside Geraldine Maddison from Forsythia Youth Project in Merthyr, political folk punk singer and activist Efa Thomas (aka Efa Supertramp), Rhiannon White, from Commonwealth Theatre and theatre director, film and TV actor Memet Ali Alabora, a founder of the Actors’ Union of Turkey.

A Nation's Theatre is a year-long celebration of theatre and creativity from around the nation. We'll be shining a light on both established and emerging artists and hosting events and debates exploring nationhood. This event is BSL interpreted.

Supported by Unlimited Impact; supporting artists and venues to celebrate the work of disabled artists, funded by Spirit of 2012.

Running time: 90 minutes, no interval.
