Event Details

HELOA London Group is proud to host the fourth annual HE Awareness Day for students from a care background and their carers. Social workers and Virtual Heads are also encouraged to attend with the young people they work with to learn more about what universities in London offer their students.

Hosted by Queen Mary University of London, the event will provide students with a taste of university and the opportunity to speak to Widening Participation Staff, Recruitment staff and care experience students from a range of London universities.

The timetable of the event can be found below.

The event is free of charge, and open to all United Kingdom studnets. HELOA London can reimburse part or whole travel costs for students up to a limit. (Please get in touch before booking travel tickets to confirm this).

Please note that any adults should accompany at least one student, and either book a group ticket or book on behalf of students if they are unable to do this themselves. If you are unable to bring a student but would like to attend please contact us.

10:00 - 10.15: Registration, Icebreakers & Welcome

10:15 - 10.45: Why go to University?

10:45 - 11.15: How to Apply to University & Support for Care Leavers

11:15 - 11.30: Break

11:30 - 12.30: Which Course? Which Uni? 

This session aims to provide students with the right tools to decide which course to study and which university to go to.

12.30 - 1.30: Lunch and Campus Tour

Participants will split into groups of young people and practioners /parent carers/social workers for the next workshop

1.30 - 2.00: Room 1: Student Ambassador Panel 
 This session will provide students an opportunity to speak to current universities students who are care leavers. This session is only for students.

1.30 - 2.00: Room 2: University Staff Q&A
This session provides an opportunity for adults supporting looked after children and care leavers to find out   about how they can support students interested in applying to university. This session is for Social Workers, Virtual Heads, and other adults who support students from care.

2.00 - 2.30: Financial Support and How to Budget

2.30 - 3.30: Taster Lecture: Experience a real university lecture!

3.30 - 3.45: How Much Have You Learned? (Interactive quiz)

3.45: Close

HELOA (Higher Education Liaison Officers Association) is a national association across all parts of the UK. It is split into regions and we are the London Group, comprising universities that are located in London.

The members belong to a range of universities within the capital and work together to collaboratively provide impartial advice about higher education.
