Heritage Open Days - Tours of the Lamb Public House Cellar
Saturday, 13 September 2014 from 10:00 to 15:00 (BST)
Eastbourne, United Kingdom
To celebrate 20 years of Heritage Open Days, Eastbourne is opening several buildings to the public and joining in the party. Entrance to all sites is free of charge - so come and join us!
Take the tour of the Lamb Inn, Old town, arguably the oldest tavern in the country, dating from 1180 (Crusades, Thomas Becket etc.)
Visit the late-Norman crypt which housed the Monks who nourished both the souls and the bellies of the local people of Burne
See the tunnels that led them below ground to their Church and visit the church itself, originally built from the conqueror’s preferred Caen stone, as he had used in the Tower of London.
This is the epicentre of old Eastbourne which is itself the epicentre of the History of England , lying , as it does , half-way between The Battle of Hastings 1066 and the Battle of Lewes 1264.
** Tours require the negotiation of some steep steps to the cellar and are, regrettably, not suitable for anyone with more than moderate mobility difficulties. **
