How to avoid becoming the next victim of ransomware

Ransomware is on the rise! A recent survey has revealed that 54% of businesses in the UK have been targeted by a ransomware attack. With 58% of these organisations paying the ransom, it is becoming a preferred and successful method for cyber criminals.

What is ransomware?

Ransomware works by infecting a computer and performing a reversible act, such as encrypting all the files and then requesting a ransom is paid, for the information needed to unencrypt the files. The ransom is often paid in bitcoins - an untraceable electronic currency.

Presentation by Mark Chimley (Director of Genus One)
Mark has over 20 years’ of experience working in the field of information security, having previously worked as a cryptographer and software engineer to design and develop cryptographic systems and secure communications software.

Mark will be discussing how ransomware works and how you can prevent it happening to your business.

Q&A panel discussion

The second half of the event will feature a panel of cyber security experts.

The panel will be able to answer your questions on ransomware and discuss the steps to improving cyber resilience within your organisation.

Daniel Lawrence – Detective Inspector and National Coordinator for Cyber PROTECT, National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC)
Daniel is a Detective Inspector with over 24 years’ police service and ensures consistency and coherency in the service delivery from the ROCU (Regional Organised Crime Units). He is a National Coordinator for Cyber PROTECT Officers across the country, and is embedded in CERT-UK as part of their UK Engagement Team.

Matt Roberts – IT Manager for ESG Rail
Matt Roberts is an IT manager with over 15 years’ experience, including working for Sky, Rolls-Royce, RBS and DeutscheBahn. A specialist of in and outsourcing IT departments, through the use of Cloud services and apprenticeships. Matt has first-hand experience of securing networks against ransomware and other malware.

Colin Robbins – Managing Consultant for Qonex and Innovation Director at Nexor
Colin is recognised as an innovator in the cyber security industry; has specific technical experience in Secure Information Exchange & Identity Systems and is credited as the co-inventor of LDAP. He helps organisations deploying the Internet of Things, understand the cyber security aspects of technology innovation and manage the associated risks.

East Midlands Cyber Security Forum

This event is being organised by the East Midlands Cyber Security Forum, which is supported by the East Midlands branches of the UK Cyber Security Forum and the Institute of Information Security Professionals (IISP), in partnership with the East Midlands Chamber (Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire).

The event provides a platform for those with an interest in cyber security to come together to share ideas with peers; build links to colleagues with similar roles; explore issues of common concern; keep up-to-date with developments in the field, and draw on the knowledge and expertise of a network of contacts.
