Event Details

Become a grammar grandmaster with senior Guardian editor David Marsh

Grammar can be a daunting subject, full of obscure and baffling rules and riddled with pitfalls for the unwary linguist. But believe it or not, this engaging evening class will actually make improving your technical abilities fun.

This large-scale symposium mixes talks, entertaining exercises and even musical interludes, to help you improve the clarity of your writing. Tutor David Marsh is the editor of the Guardian Style Guide – the grammar bible for Guardian journalists – with the world-class expertise to help anyone overcome common problems with syntax and semantics. Whether you're a novice or a full-blown pedant, this informal but informative evening will teach you the rules you need to remember, and the ones you can safely forget, leaving you feeling more confident to write freely and share your work with the world.

Course content

Although the tone of the evening is light-hearted, this course aims to explore many important rules and aspects of English grammar. Questions are welcome at all stages to ensure attendees fully understand each subject. Topics covered include:

  • What is grammar? The sounds of syntax
  • Rules you don't have to worry about
  • Rules you should worry about
  • Punctuation
  • Jargon and political incorrectness
  • How to communicate clearly

This course is for you if...

  • You love writing (or write in your job) and want to stop worrying about making mistakes.
  • You have forgotten all the grammar you were taught at school.
  • You weren't taught any grammar at school.
  • You bought Eats, Shoots & Leaves, but never quite got round to reading it.
  • You are worried about making mistakes, particularly in formal writing.
  • You can't decide when to use "that" and when to use "which". Or if it matters.
  • Your spelling, like Winnie-the-Pooh's, is a bit "wobbly".
  • You love language and would like to know more about how it works.
  • You love words and would like to know more about where they come from.
