Event Details

This course is aimed at field staff, supervisors, project managers and consultants as well as local authority archaeological curators and advisors.

The overall aim of the course is to provide an up to date overview of the ethical/legal/ecclesiastical issues and to summarize good practice in the excavation, assessment, analysis and archiving/reburial of human remains from commercial projects.

The course objectives are:

1.   To clarify what legal permissions are needed to excavate burials (updates regarding recent/forthcoming changes in the law).
2.  To explore issues of the storage  vs reburial of human remains.
3.  To briefly outline current scientific methods – especially in regard to destructive sampling.
4. To introduce the new guidance on sampling large burial grounds, within a local context.
5. To flag up the range of guidance currently available on this topic and the various organizations and groups offering advice on casework.
