OVERVIEW

This seminar is an invitation to explore African thoughts about inclusivity and belonging.

SPEAKERS

Blessing Chapfika from Hull University will demonstrate, through Ubuntu philosophy, that a community is where different people meet and commit to accept and respect each other’s unique identity and ways of being. Specifically, Blessing will argue that an Ubuntu-based community enables particularising and universalising value processes to co-exist.

Nancy Katingima Day of the University of Exeter will explore some of the tensions, challenges, and applications of inclusion/exclusion through African creative arts. Nancy will do this by emphasising the ontological imperatives exemplified in African creative arts. Together, the presenters will discuss issues such as value-negotiation versus value-imposition, subservience versus interdependence, silo-working versus collaboration in search for positive ways of promoting inclusivity and a sense of belonging in the university community.
