This course is ideal for people who already feel confident with essential navigation skills they have learnt on our Basic Navigation Course, and want to develop their skills further. We revisit the basics such as map and compass work, but take it further to include pacing and timing, route planning, GPS and mapping software, as well as access issues and the CROW Act.
You will be learning with one of our qualified Mountain Leaders, and you will get plenty of chance to practice your skills as you progress through the weekend. You won’t even need to take notes, as we will post or email information sheets to you after the course. The group sizes are kept small, usually 1:4 or 1:6 ratio. If we have larger groups we use a second instructor to reduce the ratio. You will not be forced to march vast distances over tough terrain, and the pace of the course will be dictated by the ability of the group. Each of our instructors learnt to navigate from scratch, and they understand what it is like to learn a new skill in the outdoors.
The Intermediate Navigation Courses takes place in the area of the beautiful Clwydian Range and the Snowdonia National Park. We will meet each morning at a pre-arranged location to suit the conditions and the group. We can provide lists of local accommodation options if you are travelling from further afield.
The course includes:
- Review and refresh basic skills
- Route Navigation (pacing and timing, tick features)
- Route Planning – route cards, choosing non-path options
- GPS and Mapping software
- Low Visibility navigation
- CROW Act and access issues
- Macro and Micro Navigation techniques
