Introduction to feature writing MELBOURNE
Sunday, July 7, 2013 from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM (BST)
If you think you've got what it takes to write professionally but don't know where to start, this is the course for you. Led by the head of Guardian Masterclasses Simone Baird, a former Features Editor of Time Out London, this intensive evening will guide you through the process of features writing, from the initial idea to the finished article. You'll learn how to find a unique angle to make your feature stand out, as well as what formats give a story maximum impact, and what you'll need to flesh your story out for audiences and commissioning editors.
You'll also learn practical ways to get your stories into print, including how to analyse publications and websites to learn what their editors are looking for, as well as the secrets of successful pitching. Supported with detailed handouts explaining all the jargon of features journalism, you'll leave with clear next steps for your ideas and writing.
Simone Baird is Head of Masterclasses at the Guardian. She was previously Features Editor of Time Out, the London arts and entertainment magazine. She started her journalism career in Edinburgh at The List magazine before writing for Jockey Slut, Sleazenation, The Face, the Sunday Times Style magazine, NME, Muzik and the Herald Sun.
