Description

Learn how to move from auto settings to manual on your DSLR – all in the space of a day

It's easy to get lazy with a DSLR. Since the auto settings generally do a good job, it can be tempting to let your camera make all your creative decisions for you. But the manual settings are the gateway to a vast range of creative options and effects, as well as the best way to compensate for those conditions that even the most intelligent microprocessor can't figure out.

This intensive one-day masterclass will demystify the manual world. As well as a jargon-free explanation of the full range of manual functions and settings, you'll learn the effects each of them will have on your pictures, and the right circumstances in which to use them.

You'll then put your skills to the test during an inspiring shoot in London, under the expert eye of Guardian photographer Anthony Epes, who'll provide you with live feedback on your shots and tailored advice on how to improve your technique. A fun day that will get you fully familiar with the capabilities and limits of your camera, and give you the skills you need to make the most of them.

This course is for you if...

  • You are a beginner-level photographer who wants to learn how to use your camera creatively

Course description

This intensive one-day course mixes technical instruction on the manual functions of your DSLR with theoretical tuition in the principles of good photography and practical exercises to consolidate your learning. Topics covered will include:

  • The histogram – how to interpret the most useful, and groundbreaking, feature of the DSLR
  • How to expose creatively because of (and in spite of) your light meter
  • How ISO affects image quality, and how to choose the right one
  • Shutter speed – how to use for freezing and motion blur and how it relates to lenses
  • Aperture and depth of field – how to get sharper images, and isolate details
  • Creative exposures – from deciding what's important in your image, to using mixed light sources

Tutor profile

Fine art and commercial photographer Anthony Epes has recently published two photo books, including London at Dawn, the second in his Cities at Dawn series. Anthony's work has featured in the Guardian, French Photo and The Telegraph.
