Introduction to photography: A one-day workshop

This masterclass begins by explaining the full range of manual functions and settings on your digital camera, the effects they will have on your pictures, and the right circumstances in which to use them. You’ll then put your skills to the test during an inspiring shoot around London, under the expert eye of Guardian photographer Anthony Epes, who’ll provide you with live feedback on your images and tailored advice on how to improve your technique.

Course content

• The histogram – how to interpret the most useful feature of the DSLR
• How to use a light meter to best effect
• How ISO affects image quality – and how to choose the right one
• Shutter speed – how to use it for freezing and motion blur, and how it relates to lenses
• Aperture and depth of field – how to get sharper images and isolate details
• Creative exposures – from deciding what’s important in your image, to using mixed light sources
• Learning how to train your ‘eye’
• Practical photo shoot around London, with feedback and tailored advice on your work
• Q&A and group discussion

Tutor profile

Anthony Epes is a fine art and commercial photographer whose work has featured in the Guardian, French Photo, Time Out, The Big Issue and many other international publications. He has published two books, London at Dawn and Paris at Dawn, and is currently preparing to launch further instalments shot in Venice, New York and Istanbul.
