Kingston Writing School and Kingston University Press Short Story Competitions 2014

Celebrating excellence in the short story


DATES FOR BOTH COMPETITIONS
Submissions for both competitions will be accepted from May 1, 2014.
The deadline for receipt of entries is June 30, 2014.
A shortlist for both competitions will be announced on October 1st.
Winning stories will be announced at two separate Prize Giving Ceremonies in late November/early December.
The winners will be invited to read their stories at the Prize Giving Ceremonies.
 


 

Kingston Writing School Hilary Mantel International Short Story Competition
Judged by Hilary Mantel


PRIZES
1st Prize of £3,000.
Two Runners up Prizes of £500 each.
The winner will also have the opportunity to have his/her work considered for publication by KUP (Kingston University Press).
Shortlisted and winning stories will be published in a Winners Anthology.


JUDGING
Entries will be read and judged from a selected shortlist by Hilary Mantel.
Judge’s decisions are final and no correspondence will be entered into.
All entries are anonymous and all judging is impartial.
Experienced readers will assist the judging process by selecting the shortlist for the main judge.


INSTRUCTIONS AND ELIGIBILITY

• Open to all writers worldwide.
• Stories entirely the work of the entrant.
• Written in English. Translation into English of your own work also accepted.
• Anonymous entries. Your name should not appear anywhere on the submitted story.
• Stories unpublished in any form, including online.
• Stories cannot have won prizes or been placed (as in 1st, 2nd or 3rd) in other competitions.
• A maximum of 5,000 words, no minimum. Include word count on top right of opening page. Title is not included in word count.
• 12 point, any readable font.
• Double line spaced.
• One side of the page only.
• Number the pages in footer/bottom of pages.
• Copyright of each entry remains with the author, but Kingston University Press will have unrestricted right to publish the winning and shortlisted stories in the Winners Anthology and in any relevant promotional work.

HOW TO ENTER
Pay the £10 fee by selecting the correct ‘ticket’ in the form above. You will then be sent a confirmation email containing an email address to submit your story to.

Multiple entries are accepted as long as payment is made for each submission (so if you intend to submit 3 stories, purchase three ‘tickets’).

If you wish to enter both competitions (and are eligible to do so), please select corresponding number of ‘tickets’ to the number of stories to be submitted, i.e. if you wish to submit 2 stories to the Hilary Mantel competition and 1 to the Bonnie Greer Competition (see below), select 2 Hilary Mantel ‘tickets’ and 1 Bonnie Greer ‘ticket’.
