The LIGHT consortium, led by Delcam, spent two years researching how to use lattices as self-supporting structures for lightweight metal AM parts. With a mission to inspire new design freedoms and find new solutions for the additive manufacturing (AM) of lightweight metal parts, the LIGHT consortium will be sharing its findings at a dissemination event at the Bloodhound Technical Centre in Bristol on 26 April 2016.
Be the first to hear about the project results
Take a tour of the 1,000mph Bloodhound SSC car with Bloodhound chief engineer
Network with your peers over lunch
Why lattices
Additive manufacturing (AM) has the potential to change how we design and make parts, offering the potential to produce geometrically complex parts. In practice the geometric freedom promised by AM is constrained by the overhanging sections where supporting structures are required – that’s where lattices come in.
The design freedom offered by additive manufacturing offers exciting opportunities to create waste-free, lightweight metal parts in tool-less manufacturing environments. In practice this freedom is severely limited by the need to use structures to support overhanging sections.
What is the LIGHT project
The project consortium comprises 7 technical partners, including three software and hardware providers, a service bureau and three ‘end-users’ that represent ‘extreme-engineering’ challenges within aerospace, aeronautics and automotive. Using three exciting test parts, the LIGHT project has been testing the capabilities of additive manufacturing technologies to its limits.
Hosted by consortium members, Bloodhound SSC at the Bloodhound Technical Centre in Bristol, attendees will beable to take advantage of a tour of the 1,000mph Bloodhound car with chief engineer Mark Chapman. Delegates will also have the opportunity to network over lunch.
The content of this event will be useful to anyone from industries such as aerospace, automotive, medical devices, electronics and consumer products, especially:
design engineers
manufacturing engineers
product designers
research engineers & scientists
anyone involved in managing product development and manufacturing
technology and innovation strategists from industries such as aerospace, automotive, medical devices, electronics and consumer products
