Letters, lamps and laughing gas: unearthing the private writings of Sir Humphry Davy

A public lecture by Lancaster University's Professor Sharon Ruston

Letters can reveal far more than their author ever intended…

Sir Humphry Davy was the first person to inhale nitrous oxide, isolated more chemical elements than any one has before or since, and invented the miners’ safety lamp that became known as the ‘Davy lamp’. Despite his significance most of Davy’s letters remain unpublished.

In this talk Professor Sharon Ruston shows how these letters reveal Davy the poet and  figure at his most personal.

Join us to hear about the controversy following the invention of the lamp.
