It is February 1653, just after the Fronde rebellion, and Cardinal Mazarin seeks to reassert the supreme authority of the French Court. He creates the most spectacular of occasions at the Louvre: Le Ballet Royal de la Nuit.
Huge in scale and calling upon the skills of all the greatest artists of the day, with a libretto
by Bensérade, it was in this production that the 15 year-old Louis XIV danced in the Sun King costume, banishing the tremors of the night, and forever cementing his position as ‘The Sun King’.
