Low hills Training is an employment based (in-house) training scheme provided by Aberdeen City Council (or contracted partners) for their employees, sanctioned volunteers and partner organisations. The scheme operates within the Council’s management procedures and policies of safe practice.

The exact format and content of the Lowhills course will be planned by the trainer taking into consideration the needs of the trainees and the prevailing weather / ground conditions. The course will will be structured to meet the following criteria:

•Introduction to the scheme, including how it works and how it relates to other walking awards

•Planning a journey and route finding, including use of route cards and individual/group needs.

•Navigation, including the teaching of basic navigation

•Group management

•Weather and its impact on the group

•Food and drink

•Clothing and equipment for leaders and group members

•Access and responsible use of the countryside, Including the Scottish Outdoor Access Code and what lives and grows in Lowhill areas

•Hazards and emergency procedures, including risk assessments and water hazards

 


Please find below the link to the Low Hills Logbook which participants need to download, complete the requested record of 20 walks and send back to Adventure Aberdeen by Friday 28th October 2016.

Please note that there is a charge of £125 for ACC employees to attend this event.

 Please note that there is a charge of £165 for non-Aberdeen City Council employees to attend this event. 

 

Expected Outcomes:

What can I, and ultimately the young people I work with, gain as a result of me attending this event?

Entry to the scheme is designed to encourage those members of staff with minimal hillwalking experience to participate in training, enabling them to lead groups on low hills terrain. 

Lowhills Training is intended for:

•Council employees, officially sanctioned volunteers or contracted partners working with groups from their own establishment.

••Use on Lowhills terrain in summer conditions only, generally April-October inclusive.

•Group leaders operating on ‘known terrain’.

•Use on routes which are predominantly track or path based.

Lowhills training is intended to provide staff with a basic level of knowledge and expertise to lead and supervise groups on this terrain.
