Abstract

Behaviour change is proving to be one of the hardest nuts to crack in the quest for environmental sustainability. Whilst technology and policy can provide some very neat and powerful solutions to environmental problems, at the end of the day so much comes down to our individual behaviour. 42% of the UK’s carbon emissions are a result of individual’s actions, at home and in personal travel – behaviour change has the potential to play a huge role in building a low carbon society.

Hermione will touch on why behaviour change is so important and highlight some of the key features of an effective behaviour change campaign, whilst also explaining the story and inspiration behind The DoNation, a new green sponsorship platform that replaces cash with action.

Will Usher, Research Associate at the UCL Energy Institute will then talk about his experience using The DoNation to raise sponsorship for his cycle ride from London to Ljubljana earlier this month.

About the UCL Energy Institute:

Founded in June 2009, the UCL Energy Institute (UCL-Energy) was established as UCL’s response to the global challenges of mitigating climate change and providing energy security in the 21st century. UCL-Energy, which sits within the Bartlett Faculty of the Built Environment at UCL, brings together different perspectives, understandings and procedures in energy research, transcending the boundaries between academic disciplines. It coordinates multidisciplinary teams from across the University, with the aim of accelerating the transition to a globally sustainable energy system through world-class energy research, education and policy support. www.ucl.ac.uk/energy Follow on Twitter @ucl_energy
