Making the Leap: Social enterprise and the NHS

A Guardian half-day seminar in association with ClearlySo

This seminar will focus on the challenges of transition from NHS employee to social entrepreneur.  Our experts will deliver practical advice on how to survive beyond the first contract and work toward long term financial viability.

The NHS is undergoing a fundamental transition which will see core services spun out into social enterprises. If successful, it will save money, improve efficiencies and preserve core services. However, for those spinouts making the transition, the challenge can be daunting - how will they survive beyond their first contract and how can they win the David versus Goliath battle which will surely follow against larger and better funded private sector providers?

This seminar will provide invaluable access to those individuals with the experience to help them through the early stages and demystify the daunting prospect of making the leap from NHS employee to social entrepreneur.

You will learn:

  • How to overcome the challenges of making the transition from NHS employee to social entrepreneur
  • Real life stories from social entrepreneurs and former public sector employees who are already successfully delivering health and social care contracts
  • Practical advice on how social enterprise can survive beyond that first contract
  • How to win the battle against the private sector
  • A chance to discuss key issues with policy makers

Who should attend:

  • Social entrepreneurs leading public sector spinouts
  • NHS employees faced with the prospect of making the transition from the NHS into social enterprise
  • Public sector commissioners
  • Established social entrepreneurs whose organisations are - or are considering - working with the NHS

Confirmed speakers include:

  • Mo Girach, special advisor on Social Enterprise Transition at NHS Alliance
  • Phil Conway, founder and CEO of Cool2Care (an established social enterprise that is delivering affordable and screened childcare to parents of children with disabilities)
  • Jonathan Parsons, CEO of Chime (as successful public sector spinout)
  • Maria Mills, CEO of SCA Group (an established social enterprise working on contracts for local authorities)
