By the end of 2016, more than 1,000 people will be diagnosed with cancer every day in the UK (Source: Macmillan). It’s also understood that there are 560,000 people in the UK currently working with cancer (Source: Working with Cancer).
This interactive session facilitated by Deborah James, James HR and Graham Irons, Howes Percival explore the challenges and impact of cancer in the workplace. We will discuss case study scenarios to consider the legal responsibilities of employers (in line with the Equality Act 2010) with emotional intelligence and exploring different perspectives to managing difficult, sensitive conversations.
Angela O'Dell, Macmillan Colorectal Clinical Nurse Specialist from Northampton General Hospital will also be in attendance to talk about Macmillian cancer services and support within the Northamptonshire area.
A question and answer session will follow giving you the opportunity to discuss some the challenges your business face when managing cancer in the workplace.
Deborah James has worked in the field of HR covering a variety of sectors for 11 years, 6 of which have been within an outsourced environment. She is a Chartered Member of CIPD and a qualified organisational coach and mentor specialising in leadership, performance and career coaching.
Deborah founded James HR Consultancy Ltd during 2015 after an unexpected diagnosis of bowel cancer which turned her life upside-down. Deborah was determined to make a positive difference to support businesses, cancer patients and those impacted or affected by cancer within the workplace, and after careful planning created a Cancer Employment Advice Service.
Graham Irons is a partner at Howes Percival LLP solicitors based in their Northampton office. Graham provides advice to clients in all areas of employment law and has been recognised in the Legal 500 as someone who 'inspires confidence‘. Graham is a regular speaker at a range of events and has a reputation for delivering fun and practical seminars and training.

This event if free for CIPD members to attend. There is a non-member fee of £12, places may be cancelled up to 1 week before the event, after that fee is non-refundable
