On Sunday 26th, there'll be a massive Northern Quarter party taking place on Thomas Street and Edge Street. This means that from 12pm - 9pm there'll be security manning roads on the approach to MadLab.
To get through, tell them that you are attending the Game Jam at MadLab. All security has been briefed and they are under strict instructions not to obstruct you. If you do encounter any difficulties, call Dunk from Common on 07769 792463. You can also call Marie (Socio Rehab/ Home Sweet Home) on 07971 508785.
If you come on the Saturday, be sure to pick up a gold wristband at MadLab. If you wear this on Sunday you can get in and out without any palaver.

Are you a coder, artist or audio designer interested in videogame design? Or, are you a gamer who’s curious about how videogames are put together? If so, we’d like to invite you to come join us at Madlab for the second Manchester game jam! Madlab will be hosting the event for the full weekend, so Manchester’s community of nerds, artists and gamers can get together to design and code playable videogames from scratch in 48 hours (or less!)
The jam will be over the weekend of the 25th and 26th August, to coincide with the Ludum Dare global jam (ludumdare.com/compo). Some people will be entering the full 48-hour Dare (which is a solo online contest with a few rules), and we’ll also be running our own jam too, so people can drop in and out over the weekend. We’re encouraging group efforts, so none-coders and beginners are all highly encouraged to team up and get stuck in. In the past we’ve had the Larkin’ About pervasive gaming experts in the house, and some board/card game folks too, so if you want to take your game idea off the screen and make it into something bigger then we have you covered.
We’ll also have some retro arcade machines up and running, as well as our giant step-on controller that the Hac:Manchester guys built for our jam event at the Maker Faire.

I’m not a programmer, will I be any use at the jam?
Absolutely! We’re encouraging a really diverse group of people: artists, designers, audio people and everyone in between. Group jams will be happening both days, so we’ll make sure everyone’s teamed up.
I’m a student/beginner. Can I come?
Yep! Everyone is welcome. The last jam saw a great mix of every skill level, from absolute novices up to indie developers and industry veterans. If you’re making games, or you want to know how it works, you’re welcome to come jam with us.
What are the rules?
Generally, there aren’t many. Some people will be taking on the Ludum Dare, who have their own rules for game submissions. Apart from that, our jams will be informal and fun group efforts: there’ll be a theme for each one, and some sort of time limit, but apart from that: anything goes.
What’s the schedule?
The jam is 10am on the Saturday through to 5PM on the Sunday. There’ll be a general theme for the weekend, and presentation roughly at the end of each day, so we can see all the cool stuff our jammers have come up with.
Do I need to bring a computer?
Ideally, yes. Although we’ll have some other fun stuff happening (board games, pervasive gaming), the focus of the weekend will generally be making videogames. There’s high-speed WiFi and lots of plug sockets, but you’ll need your own machine. Any laptop will do, jam games are generally pretty lo-fi.
I only develop in [insert language], or on [insert platform], is this OK at the gamejam?
Of course! Want to make your game in Scratch and not write any code? Cool. Want to roll your own C++ behemoth? You’re mental, but that’s cool too! Use whatever language or platform you’re comfortable with, or ditch the computer altogether if you like: we’ve had board games and pervasive games in the past that went down a storm.
Who owns the games that get made?
You do. We’re going to put up some webspace to host the finished games, and we’re encouraging people to share their code too: looking at how people have built stuff is all part of the fun. Ownership of anything goes to the creator of the game, but sharing is caring, right?
Can I participate remotely?
For this event, no. It’s a hands-on, group event.
I don’t have a ticket, can I come anyway?
If we have tickets left, you can pay on the door, but it’s generally a good idea to grab a ticket in advance: http://gamejam2.eventbrite.com. The ticket number is based on how many people fit in MadLab, so once they’re gone, they’re gone. Drop us an email/tweet if you want to check availability.
I have a ticket, but now I can’t make it. What do I do?
Please let us know, so we can refund you and give someone else your ticket. Demand was high last time, so we don’t want to waste any tickets!
