‘Mapping Space’: is a collective drawing exercise, where a group communally make a very large fantasy map of an imaginary island, peninsula or continent.

Participants will each draw a section of coastline and this is continued to form a fantasy island. Individual choices of towns, or areas, and significant geographical features are made. Then, jointly, the group will decide on roads and infrastructure, and how the island is viable, economically and politically. Finally, the group ‘beautifies’ the map.

In a focussed but playful exercise, the workshop aims to explore how individuals interact and how a group identity is formed. The group dynamic and social relations are mapped and negotiated through the drawing process, in creating a collective space which is ‘owned’ individually, but with an agreed common identity.
