Meet the Experts: Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA)

HESA collect, process and publish data about higher education (HE) in the UK. As the trusted source of HE data and analysis, they play a key role in supporting and enhancing the competitive strength of the sector. They work under a statutory framework on behalf of the funding councils and UK government departments and produce official statistics.

For many independent higher education providers, they are the body which they submit data to in an annual return. Last year 63 providers submitted data and this year almost all providers with Designation will do the same. Their data collection will form an important part of regulation and public information for independent providers in the near future.

Key Topics:

HESA's Data Futures Programme - A fundamental transformation in the way HESA collects its data. With an aim to create more relevant, reliable and timely information about higher education for the benefit of the sector, and to deliver this in more efficient ways which reduce the burden on providers.

Changes to HESA - HESA will discuss their upcoming changes and the AP data return which is due on 7th October.

The Experts:

Paul Clark, Chief Executive – Paul joined HESA in May 2015, following roles at Universities UK and the University of Oxford. Paul has led a number of sector-wide data initiatives, including work on open data for higher education, cyber security, improving data skills and capability, and using data for increased efficiency and benchmarking.

Adam van Coevorden, Senior Institutional Liaison Officer – Adam has presented at a number of events specific to independent providers including our own Getting started with NSS and DLHE.

Alison Berry, Head of Stakeholder Liaison - Alison works with all providers and will talk through the data submission process for alternative providers in more detail.

Rebecca Haslam, Senior Information Analyst - Rebecca works with organisations and providers to help them take opportunities to use HESA data.

Gabby Green, Trainer - Gabby works in the training team and provides training and additional support to all providers in relation to their HESA submissions.
