  • Basic overview of DoLS

Learning outcomes

  • Attendees to be aware of their legal responsibilities under the Mental Capacity Act and the implications for their practice
  • Understand the principles of the Mental Capacity Act and have the knowledge to apply them in their everyday practice
  • Be able to use a framework for supporting and involving people when making decisions
  • Recognise how the provisions in the Act and the Code of Practice help to keep people safe
  • Understand how the Mental Capacity Act supports human rights
  • Reflect and explore on how human rights principles inform good practice when supporting people to make decisions
  • Reflect on what else you need to do to improve your knowledge and understanding of how best to provide care and support to people
  • Gain a basic awareness of Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards

Who should attend?

This is an introductory level course. It is aimed at staff who work with adults with care and support needs, and who need to know the basics of good MCA practice.  

For example:

  • frontline staff, team leaders and managers in care and support providers
  • personal assistants
  • volunteers
  • advocates
  • telephone helpline staff
  • healthcare staff and managers, including GPs, health visitors, pharmacists
