Description

This course will outline how workers can identify alcohol related-harm among older people and how they can help drinkers address or manage their problems. The course is appropriate for staff in all services who work with older people who are at risk of alcohol related harm.

By the end of the training course, participants should be able to:

  1. understand the alcohol unit and sensible limit system and apply it to individual consumption among older people

  2. use and interpret an appropriate alcohol screening tool

  3. communicate brief advice effectively and confidently to older individuals about their alcohol use

  4. improve the knowledge of individuals on the physical, social and psychological effects of alcohol in a way that supports change.

  5. assess the risks associated with particular patterns of drinking and identify those older people in need of further intervention

  6. provide information about the various treatment and support optionsavailable for older problem drinkers

  7. identify and make appropriate referrals to local services for those experiencing problems with alcohol

  8. develop an appropriate care plan for an older alcohol misuser who is difficult to engage in treatment
