The Digital Library of Birmingham

Tuesday 22nd October 10am - 12noon

After CAKE’s short hiatus, due to last month’s official launch of the Michael Chowen Prototyping Hall, we are back with an action packed schedule. Come and hear about the Digital Library of Birmingham, MuseumCamp 2013 and get to experience a demo of The Immersive Museum.

It’s been just a month since the hugely successful launch of Europe’s largest public Library here in the centre of Birmingham.  We are very fortunate this month to have Rebecca Bartlett as our guest speaker.  Rebecca, of Ammba Digital, has been working with the Library of Birmingham team as Innovation / Digital Strategy Lead.  She will be joined by Barry Griffiths Innovation and Development Officer at the Library

Together they will discuss a number of projects including Discovery Table, version 2 of Dozens and Trails mobile application, Kinect, the large scale media walls in the Library and how they are exploring ways to connect digital experiences in the physical building with the wider digital world.

The Digital Heritage Demonstrator project has collaborated with the Library of Birmingham on the development of the 65” Digital Discovery Table.  After the presentation the technical team will be available to demo and discuss the application in the hall.  The latest version of Dozens and Trails will also be available on mobile devices.

Linda Spurdle and Mar Dixon will be reporting on museumcamp 2013, an innovative cross- sector unconference which they ran earlier in October.

Gido Hakvoort, one of our PhD researchers, will also be demoing some cutting edge research recently presented in St Andrews, on ‘The Immersive Museum’. This enables visitors to a museum to interactive with physical objects using a mobile phone and retrieving further information and interacting virtually using nearby touch screens and tables. The objects for this demo have been kindly provided by Lapworth Museum.

We hope you can make it!

Digital Heritage Demonstrator Project

Given the wide and diverse range of academics, businesses, students and Heritage organisations working collaboratively on the DHD project, we will be hosting free monthly “cake” (Collaboration and Knowledge Exchange) mornings to showcase current developments, discuss funding opportunities and tackle current challenges. The DHD team are here each month to facilitate introductions, listen to ideas and provide technical expertise. We have a number of touch-tables and vertical touch-screens which are all available for use and as it goes without saying that there are a delicious selection of cakes and refreshments throughout the morning.

We are located in the ERI building, off Pritchatts Road in Edgbaston, Birmingham. Our nearest pay and display car park is the North Car Park on the opposite side of the road. If you put our post code into a satellite navigation system, it will direct you to the University of Birmingham Edgbaston campus.

You can access printable directions and a map by going to our University web page HERE

If you have any special requirements, please do not hesitate to get in touch at contacts@dhd.bham.ac.uk or by phone on 0121 414 9153.
