Moving from a specialist or supported educational setting into employment can seem next to impossible for young people with learning difficulties or other disabilities such as autism. The statistics are daunting: Department of Health research shows that while 65% of people with learning disabilities would like to have a job, only 7% actually have one.
At Our Barn we are ambitious for such young people, and supporting the transition to a meaningful adult life is one of our primary aims. Having access to information, understanding what opportunities are available and making plans to leave education are all vital to success.
We have invited Tom Frankish, Employment and Training Specialist with the London Borough of Hounslow to speak to parent carers and other interested people. Tom brings a wealth of knowledge and over 14 years experience of helping disabled people find and retain paid employment. He will lead us through current opportunities, guide us through alternatives, inform us on available support and what employers are looking for. He brings a 'can do' approach tempered with realistic expectations.
By the end of the event parent carers and other interested individuals should know what to do now, what's going to take longer and we hope will have started thinking how we (as a group) can work together to improve the opportunities available. Don't worry, Our Barn will take on the coordination of this!
We intend to build further on this work by networking with local employers, working out practical work experience, develop our own services and (if necessary) take on a campaigning and advocacy role for young people with learning difficulties to be considered for employment.
Whilst our experience is very much based in the Hounslow locality people from other boroughs are welcome to attend - we would like to build a west London network.
This will be an informal and informative day, with time for questions and networking. A sandwich lunch and refreshments are included. We will provide some halal and vegetarian options for lunch. If you have any additional requirements please let us know at the time of booking.
Places are free. We suggest a donation of £10 (if you are able) to cover costs. Please select the appropriate ticket, either Workshop only for no donation, or Workshop + donation when booking. We expect this to be a popular event, so please book early.
