Outliving Oneself: Surviving Sexual Violence
Thursday, 3 December 2015 from 18:30 to 20:00 (GMT)
Susan Brison is a US philosophy professor who wrote the critically important book Aftermath: Violence and the Remaking of a Self and a more recent piece Everyday Atrocities and Ordinary Miracles: Or Why I (Still) Bear Witness to Sexual Violence (But Not Too Often). The book is an exploration of how she coped with rape, which included asking why philosophy has so little to say about sexual violence and having to rethink her understanding of the self. Her radical thinking informs the MA teaching in CWASU.
The Child and Woman Abuse Studies Unit (CWASU) is part of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities at London Metropolitan University, and is recognised as a centre of excellence, with an international reputation for research, evaluation, training and consultancy. Established in 1987, CWASU has over two decades of experience in conducting independent feminist research that creates useful knowledge for policy makers, practitioners, survivors, supporters and activists. CWASU is the only research unit in Europe that integrates a focus on all forms of violence against women and child abuse. We have been at the forefront of developing innovative methodologies, and continue to explore new ways of creating and analysing knowledge.
CWASU has a vibrant postgraduate culture; the unit was the first in Europe to run the MA in Woman and Child Abuse, and has eleven PhD students. We have also welcomed post-doctoral visiting researchers from Europe, Latin America and Central Asia.
